Hard rain. A downpour that sends a few leaves skittering inside with soaked feet, and into the roar of voices in a packed room. Gordon street Garage is cavernous, a cafe that has more the feeling of a tavern with its spacious seating area and high ceilings. The light is warm and cozy, and the treats lining the counter look delectable.
I sat there for a few hours, painting, listening to 'American Gods' by Neil Gaiman, and with the sheer number of seats, no one seemed to mind. The staff were incredibly friendly, and chatted with me occasionally when they cleaned the tables nearby.
A short walk from City West station through Harbour town, or a stroll down long streets from the central station, Gordon Street Garage is nestled in the heart of Perth. It's an old warehouse, with the ghost of a car workshop still winding its way through bric a brac that hangs from the ceiling. Bus seats are arranged at most of the tables, and recycled wood making up most of the tables and surrounding furniture. An open window for the kitchen allows for wandering eyes to gaze at the chefs as they move amongst the din.
With an open floor suited to people gazing, It's the sort of place you meet someone new, or to catch up with old. Hearty fare best for breakfast, The coffee is free-trade and roasted in house, and deliciously full bodied. Whether by yourself, with coworkers, or if you need to take out a group of friends, these guys have you covered.
